Common Questions About Handmade Coffins & Caskets

What’s the difference between a coffin and a casket?

The words are often used interchangeably, but they describe different shapes. A coffin is the traditional hexagonal (six-sided) design — wider at the shoulders and tapered toward the head and feet. A casket is rectangular with four sides and typically features a hinged lid. We build both styles, so whether you’re looking for a traditional coffin or a rectangular casket, we’ve got you covered.

Can I buy a coffin on my own instead of through a funeral home?

Absolutely. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you have the legal right to purchase a coffin or casket from any source — and your funeral home is required to accept it without charging you an extra handling fee. This is federal law, and it applies in Texas. Buying directly from a builder like us typically saves families 25–45% compared to funeral home pricing.

Does Texas require a coffin for burial?

Texas does not require a coffin or burial container by law. However, individual cemeteries may have their own requirements. We recommend checking with your chosen cemetery about their specific policies. Our all-wood coffins meet the requirements for green and natural burial sites as well as traditional cemeteries.

How long does it take to build a coffin?

Standard builds take 1–3 days, depending on the size and level of customization. We also offer rush builds for time-sensitive situations at an additional cost.

Can I order a coffin in advance?

Yes. Pre-planning is a thoughtful choice that many families appreciate. You can order your coffin now, and we’ll arrange storage until it’s needed. Contact us to discuss the details.

What wood types do you offer?

We currently build with pine, cedar, and maple. Each has a distinct grain, color, and character. Custom wood species are available upon request.

What are your payment terms?

We require a 50% deposit to begin your build, with the remaining 50% due at completion. This helps us secure materials and dedicate workshop time to your project.

Do you deliver?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in Texas for a distance-based fee. Local pickup in Navasota is always available. We’ll coordinate timing to make sure your coffin arrives when and where it’s needed.

Do you offer religious or faith-based options?

Yes. We can include crosses, scripture engravings, wood-burned symbols, and other faith-based elements. Memory Eternal is Orthodox-affiliated and we welcome families of all faiths.
